St. George Schoolhouse

The owners of this historic St. George schoolhouse converted it from a seasonal retreat to a full-time home. Upgrading the old schoolhouse space, they added a master suite over a two-car garage, a screened-in porch, and an open deck.

The owners hoped to retain the interior plaster walls, ceiling, and wainscoting of the original schoolhouse. However, disrepair required replacement with new materials. The original wood floors were sanded and re-stained. An original interior door was used for the powder bath and laundry room as a daily reminder of the new home’s past.

The addition included a two-car garage with stair access up to a foyer, the master suite, and the main living area, complete with a large coat storage closet. The master suite includes a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams, a walk-in closet with custom built-ins, and a beautiful bath with an enclosed steam shower. A screened-in porch and an outside deck complete the living area needs.

Modern technical features include a tankless water heater, preparation for a solar energy system, and preparation for an emergency generator. The result of this effort is a beautiful new home that retains the charm of its history while providing all the comforts of a newly designed home.
